The Dried Fruits Myth
Do dried fruits maintain their nutritional value?
With the exception of vitamin C, most other nutrients are maintained within dried fruits. For example iron; a nutrient found within apricot and raisins remains in fairly high levels when in their dried state. Moreover, dried apricots are rich in fibers, as 1-2 a cup contains 3.5g of fibers and 105 calories, whereas 1 cup of fresh apricots contains 3g of fiber and 75 calories. On the other hand, the cup of fresh apricots contains 15mg of vitamin C, a figure that is lost in the dried apricots. In both cases though, vitamin A – a vital antioxidant remains at a stable level. If you find it difficult to find fresh fruits then you can always turn to dried fruits as an alternative. Make sure you always ready the label of the product as in many cases it may contain added sugar.
Enjoy dried fruits either in your yogurt, as a snack or in your salad.
